The short answer
Keep a completed world backup somewhere separate from your game server, label it with the world and date, and test a restore to a separate instance before replacing progress. Valheim’s world save and backup options are documented by Iron Gate. Campworld exposes completed provider backups; contact support before importing a save.
Pick a moment your group can remember.
Make a copy after a major build, before a large update and before changing where the world is hosted. These are easy moments to remember because the group already knows something important happened.
Ask everyone to leave for a planned snapshot if the game or host requires it. Prefer a completed backup over copying live files mid-write. Record the world name, date, game version and why you saved it. “Before the mountain expedition” is more useful than “backup-final-2”.
Check the save path rather than guessing.
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide documents the save-directory override and the server’s save interval and automatic-backup controls. A custom save location changes where an operator must look for the world. Follow the actual configuration, not a path copied from an unrelated tutorial. [1]
A copy of server settings alone is not proof that the playable world is preserved. If you are moving between hosts, ask which files the export includes and which exact import process is supported. Keep the original untouched until a restored copy has been checked.
Prove the copy before you need it.
Restore to a separate instance or a safe local test setup. Confirm that the expected structures and latest progress are present. Do not overwrite the only working world just to find out whether an archive opens.
If you must replace a live world, first preserve its current state, tell the group which progress will be replaced and agree on a quiet window. A backup lets you recover a known moment; it does not merge two diverging histories.
- The backup job is complete, not queued or still running.
- The archive is stored separately from the game server.
- The label identifies the world, date and relevant version.
- A separate restore has loaded the expected progress.
- The current world is preserved before any replacement.
What to expect in Campworld.
Completed backup downloads appear in the world’s tools after the provider confirms a real backup. A world still being installed may not have a backup yet. Never assume an empty list means that a copy exists somewhere else.
Keep an independent download of important milestones and ask support about compatible imports. If a backup action fails, include the world name, time and action in your support request. Do not include account sign-in codes or private connection credentials.
